Verse of the Day

April 2, 2020

Psalms 61:6  Thou wilt prolong the king’s life: and his years as many generations.
Psalms 61:7  He shall abide before God for ever: O prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him.

Our verses today provide us the second thing I believe the Lord wants us to work on to be victorious in “Times of Trouble”. He wants us to Seek Him! David said he would abide before God forever.  That is what we need to do in our own lives.  To seek the Lord.

The best way to do that is through God’s Word. Every day spend some time in your Bible.  Read the Scriptures and study them.  Read them slowly, phrase by phrase.  Meditate on them and ask the Lord for understanding and Wisdom.

Often times, we use the excuse I don’t have time. I think the Lord has taken that excuse away from us. We also get the idea, when we hear the instruction to read the Bible, I can’t read all of that.  No one is saying read the entire Bible, just take a passage of Scripture and read it, think it through and meditate upon it. Work on Quality time with the Lord. The quantity will grow naturally.

Isaiah 55:6 says “Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near.” I have found that if I get into my Bible my Bible gets into me.

Psalms 61:8  So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows.

We have been talking about the things I believe the Lord wants us to work on to be Victorious in “Times of Trouble”. Our verse this morning gives us two things.  The first is to Sing! Yes, Sing! Music is the language of our emotions.  A song can influence and change our mood. David had experience with this. He was called on to play music and, I think, sing for Saul when Saul had an evil spirit.

For you and I, we are affected by the music we listen to.  The lesson is for us to SING unto the Lord. It keeps our minds focused on HIM! Let me give you an example, have you ever said: “I have this song stuck in my head?”.   Most of us have had that experience.  I have noticed a number of people have been posting songs on Facebook.  The common thread about those songs as been most of them have been the older hymns that speak to us about being able to trust or depend on the LORD!  We inherently know that our thinking will follow what we are listening to and singing about.

So, let's sing and worship the One who loves us and died for us and lives for us. The One who is at the right hand of the Father praying for us, looking over us and looking out for us.  His name is JESUS!

It matters not if you can ‘carry a tune in a bucket’, pick up your bucket and sing.  Sing along with some solid wonderful Christ-centered music. Lift up your voice in Praise.  He is Worthy. I think of the line from the song “He’s All I Need” that says “ He’s all I need when trials come”.  It is true. Jesus is all we need and the One we can trust.

Psalms 100:1  Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.

Psalms 61:8 So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows.

We have been talking about the things I believe the Lord wants us to work on to be Victorious in “Times of Trouble”. Our verse this morning gives us two things.  Yesterday we talked about Singing.  Today we will talk about the second thing in the verse.  That is, to Serve.  To perform those things we are called to do and we have told the Lord we would do. So often, we tell the Lord we will, and then we procrastinate or renege on our commitments.  David determined he would sing because he knew that singing would help him to keep Jesus in His proper place in our lives.  Praising the Lord causes us to affirm that Jesus is worthy of any sacrifice and every effort we are called on to give for Him.

There is also the matter of serving others.  In today’s world, there is a great need for people to serve and have a servant’s heart. I want to challenge you today to not only serve Jesus but to serve others also.  Find a way. Use your talent. Sew masks, record a Sunday School lesson on your phone and email it to me.  Make a phone call to a Church Family member to encourage and check on them. Whatever your talent use it to be a blessing to others. I think of this line from the poem “Others” by Charles D. Meigs,

Others, Lord, yes others
Let this my motto be
Help me to live for others
That I may live like Thee.

Jesus said in Matthew 25:40  "And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Philippians 4:9  Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

I am interested today in the presence of the GOD of Peace.

Worry and Fear are emotions of the mind.  They must be controlled by the mind.  Proverbs says “as he thinketh in his heart so is he.” When we think wrongly it affects our whole being. It can even make us sick physically. Often times, we allow the worries and fears of others to invade us and cripple us.

Our verses today end with the HOPE that the God of peace will be with us.  It is not an idle promise but one with instructions to make it real and true in us. Those instructions tell us not to just think right and act right, but what to think on and to act on. Meditate on the list of things to think about. They surely point us to God’s Word. It has been said that the Bible will keep you from sin or sin will keep you from the Bible. When we fail to get into God’s Word our mind will wander to places it does not belong and we will begin to listen to things that are not right, then we will begin to worry and fear. We must Discipline ourselves to read and meditate on God’s Word.  It is only then we will hold onto the promises of Love, Peace and Protection that our Lord gives.

Take time today to think on things that will help not hurt. That will build Faith not fear. That will allow us to Worship not Worry!

Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

I am still interested today in the presence of the GOD of Peace. Read carefully that first sentence.  I believe that the wording I used is the secret to the Peace of God.  It is the presence of the God of Peace.

Our verses above speak of the peace of God.  That is a wonderful thing. We desperately need it. Not only in today’s world filled with uncertainty, but every day.  We have always needed it, now it seems to be more of a recognized need.  Maybe that is one of the reasons our Father is allowing all of this chaos to go on.  To cause us to understand we NEED HIM!

One of the things the Lord is speaking into my life is it is not the peace of God that should be my pursuit; it is the presence of God. The peace of God is a by-product of His Presence.  When He is on the scene He takes control, He gives direction and He gives Victory!

These verses give us some insight in obtaining His presence in our life; it is through prayer that we can have His presence.  When, we develop the habit, of not just daily praying and seeking Him, but moment by moment, we learn to consult and surrender to His direction and will, then we will experience His Presence.

Most of you know my close friend Kurt LaBouve.  I love to hear him sing his arrangement of the classic hymn “What A Friend We Have In Jesus”. One of the refrains says:

Oh, what peace we often forfeit
Oh, what needless pain we bear

All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer

Invest time today taking everything to God in Prayer!

Be Blessed,

Bro. Dewayne
