Romans 7:24-25 (KJV)
24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
The theme that I have been trying to press upon us is the idea of going higher with our Saviour. Our verses today, you may say, do not fit. But, bear with me a minute. The Apostle Paul is making a statement we all can relate to.
Let’s look at the last phrase of verse 25. Now Paul is not excusing sin! But he is admitting that sometimes his mind is thinking right and desiring to do right but his flesh is not cooperating with him. The word mind here indicates the intellect. He is saying my mind knows better but my flesh still thinks and does wrong. The point being, Paul is saying only Jesus can deliver us.
In this life, He delivers progressively, that is day by day and moment by moment, failure by failure. One day, He will deliver permanently. Thank you, Lord.
But, for today, we need Him. We need to practice calling on Him to bring our flesh in subjection to Jesus and His Word!
1 Corinthians 9:27 (KJV)
27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
It takes discipline as I Corinthians tells us. We will look at this verse tomorrow, for today, let us look to Jesus and ask Him to forgive us when we fall, strengthen us to get up, steady us once we are up, and encourage us to go forward with Him.
