Proverbs 22:1 – A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.

This verse holds special meaning to me.  It is the verse the Lord gave me for my Dad’s Funeral.  Today is his birthday.  I miss him so very much.  Forgive me please but I need to reminisce.

My Father was my hero.  My brothers and sister were blessed to have him.  He was a wonderful Dad.  He was raised by a good man my Papa, Dennis Jowers.  My Papa instilled in my Dad a respect for his name.  He taught him even though you may be poor in the world’s eyes you were not less of a person or of less value.  You value your heritage.  My Dad placed great emphasis on a good name.  He wanted to pass that on to his children.

My Papa was a godly man.  My Dad was not saved until after I began serving as Pastor at Grace.  My brother was killed in a semi-truck accident.  I helped preach his funeral.  I pleaded with my Dad to be saved.  The following Sunday he went forward in Church and received Christ.  I am so thankful for that day.

I tell you this for two reasons.  One, because even a good name is not enough to get you into Heaven.  You must be born again.  Saved.  Washed in the Blood of the Lamb.

Second, I believe our verse today gives us an admonition to strive for a good name.  A name that leaves behind a good legacy.  A name of integrity and honesty.  People will forget how much money you have, but they will remember forever, your honesty, your kindness, your smile, your love.

In a day like today, where it seems as if you cannot trust anyone, how much more should we as believers strive to have a good name that honors Jesus!

I am proud of my name and of my Dad!  I Love you Daddy I miss you so.

Thanks for allowing me this time to reminisce.

Be Blessed,
Bro. Dewayne
