Proverbs 4:20-23 (KJV)
20  My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.
21  Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
22  For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
23  Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

Today I want to look at verse 23. The word “keep” is of special interest. The word in both the Hebrew and Greek language means “to guard, to observe, to be a keeper, to be a watchman, watch for hidden things.”  I think of not only a soldier that is standing his “watch” but also of “Special Forces” that go on reconnaissance missions to obtain needed and valuable information that aids in defeating the enemy. To guard your heart is a good piece of advice. But this word is not just the idea of standing idle but being proactive.

No wonder the Bible adds “with all diligence.” The idea here also adds to the concept of guarding. It is even translated one time in our Bibles into the English word “prison.” Giving us the idea of protecting treasure.

It is the cornerstone of success as a Christian. Guarding the heart is so necessary. We are exposed to so many things that corrupt our thinking and lead us away from the Lord. We must treasure our heart and what we are exposed to and what we allow entrance to our hearts and minds. If we begin to think wrongly, we will begin to act wrongly.  The key begins with what are we allowing ourselves to be exposed to? Is it Biblical? Is it Holy? Is it edifying? Is it Pleasing to the Lord?

 Think about it!

 Be Blessed,
